20 years of AHL hockey in St. John’s came to an end as the St. John’s IceCaps fell 2-1 to the Syracuse Crunch in overtime at the Onondaga County War Memorial Arena on Friday night.
Erik Condra potted a power play marker late in the first to give the Crunch the lead. After a scoreless second period, Stefan Matteau found the back of the net for the IceCaps on the power play to tie it up in the third. Daniel Audette and Jacob de la Rose picked up the helpers on the equalizer.
Former IceCaps Captain Gabriel Dumont found the back of the net just 2:18 into the extra frame to win it for Syracuse, taking the best-of-five series in four games.
Charlie Lindgren stopped 23-of-25 shots for St. John’s, while Crunch netminder Mike McKenna stood tall turning aside 26-of-27 pucks.
The 20 years of AHL hockey in St. John’s comes to a close after a hard-fought playoff run.
