Newfoundland teams lost their opening games at the Canadian Travelers Curling playdowns in Kingston. Wendy Dunne and her Newfoundland and Labrador rink lost 12-2 to Manitoba. They play the Yukon and Ontario today. The Andrew Symonds rink fell 7-4 to Alberta.

Memorial SeaHawks have named their female athlete of the week. Basketball player Sydney Stewart gets the nod. She helped the women’s team take two from Dalhousie. She collected 17 points in the first game against Dal and hooped 27 points in game two. Interesting to note Stewart is averaging 19 points per game.
The St. John’s Edge Basketball team will make it official. They have signed Newfoundlander Carl English to a contact for the upcoming season. The Edge Inaugural Season officially gets underway Saturday against the Island Storm as part of a five-game road trip .

The 55th edition of the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, gets underway Sunday at the Swan River Curling Club in Manitoba. Newfoundland and Labrador is represented by the team skipped by Chris Ford third Brooke Godsland; second Zach Young and lead Kate Murphy from the St. John’s Curling Club. They play their first game Monday
